After much anticipation, Tessanne Chin’s major label debut album, Count On My Love (2014 Republic Records), is finally here. The season five winner of NBC’s The Voice, who competed on Team Adam Levine (lead singer of Maroon 5), is more than just another reality show champion, but a true artist that has not forgotten where she comes from.
Although iTunes categorizes Count On My Love as pop, the album is heavily rooted in reggae with a touch of dancehall, R&B and dub-step (or as Tessanne calls it, “pop with a Jamaican swag”). The majority of the LP’s songs incorporate Caribbean rhythms mixed with pop melodies to create a unique blend of island vibes that appeals to a universal audience. Tessanne stays true to her heritage by occasionally firing wicked vocal runs in Jamaican patois that are still understandable for non-Jamaican listeners. This element allows her non-Caribbean fans to relate to her lyrics, which is essential to the record’s success.

After the success with his previous single, “Joanna Wine”, Canadian-born reggae artist, Golden Chyld, returns with his follow up single “Rise Up”.
This up-tempo, drum-driven reggae anthem flows with conscious lyrics that urges social action. “The single ‘Rise Up’ was one of the core messages I wanted to convey to people for 2014. Irrespective of what you’re going through, rising against all odds and doing your part to make society a better place is always one of the most lasting impacts you can make. That’s what I want to do with my music: leave a lasting impact on fans and society,” Golden Chyld tells us.
“Rise Up” is now available on iTunes. You can follow Golden Chyld on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Have you ever been cheated on? If so, you can definitely relate to the lyrics of Golden Chyld’s brand new song “Joanna Wine”. This Canadian dancehall/reggae artist addresses the issue of infidelity that plagues our society. During the chorus, Golden Chyld sings to his unfaithful significant other:
“Well you got Joe, well meet Miss Joanna Wine.
[She doesn’t] only love me my for my dollar card.
When I’m with you, she’ll be on my mind,
And all she wants is my time.”
In this plot driven music video, Golden Chyld handles his situation on his own terms. Instead of getting mad, he gets even and finds a mistress of his own. Watch until the end to see the conclusion of his story (there’s a nice twist that we won’t give away)!

Hirie is one of Hawaii’s brightest breakout stars of 2013. Her debut album is available now on iTunes!
In the last year or so, Hawaiian artists have emerged onto the reggae scene in full force. Musicians such as The Green, J Boog and Anuhea have attracted attention from the reggae community across the world and have even lead to collaborations with prominent Jamaican artists like Tarrus Riley and Peetah Morgan.
Hawaii’s newest artist, Hirie, is certainly no different. Although she was born in the Phillipines and raised in Italy, Hirie spent most of her of life in Oahu, Hawaii. On her brand new debut album (VP Records Associated Label Group – VPAL), she mixes her silky, smooth voice with roots, reggae and pop to create her own unique style. Unlike many solo reggae artists, Hirie records with a live band as opposed to using pre-recorded mixtape “riddims”. This organic feel and sound truly sets Hirie apart from most singers in her genre. Recently, we got a chance to speak with Hirie about her album, reggae’s popularity in Hawaii and much more!
On set for her new music video “Sensi Boy”
Congrats on your debut album! What is your favorite song on your album and why?
Thank you! It’s hard to say! At the moment, my favorite song is “Lost and Found”. I really enjoy the vibes and the way it makes me feel when I listen to it.
How did your musical career begin? When did you discover you could sing?
I sang at a very young age, maybe three or four. My parents always said they knew I could sing because I would passionately belt out a Whitney Houston song; I began singing at home, in my basement, along with my Barbie karaoke machine (laughs)!

Last night on NBC’s The Voice, Jamaica’s pride and joy, Tessanne Chin impressed all four judges (Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton) with her amazing cover of Pink’s pop hit “Try”. All four judges instantly hit their button in excitement to signify they wanted her on their teams. The crowd went wild and as she sang her final note!
After her performance, Adam complimented her by saying, “You can easily win The Voice this year, I don’t have a doubt in mind!” He added that reggae music is his favorite musical genre in the world. After much battling between the judges, Tessanne finally picked Team Adam!
We wish Tessanne Chin all the best of luck this season of The Voice! She could be the first Jamaican in history to win the contest! Go #TeamTessanne! Make sure you vote for her if she makes it to the live shows!
