What’s your favorite Bob ‘Nesta’ Marley song? “One Love”, “Three Little Birds”, “No Woman, No Cry” are all reggae classics and synonymous with Jamaican music. Tourists who visit the country look forward to hearing those tunes on the beach to enhance their island experience. Should they arrive next year January to February 2015, tourists can also enjoy their favorite Marley numbers live in theater!
That’s right, a Marley musical! The Bob Marley Group of Companies has partnered with the Jamaica Musical Theatre Company’s (JMTC) to present the JMTC’s upcoming original children’s musical production, Nesta’s Rock. Not only is the musical inspired by his childhood, but Nesta’s Rock also marks and celebrates the 70th Anniversary of the late king of reggae on February 6, 2015. The musical will create new renditions of Marley’s most popular singles, such as “Trench Town Rock”, “Redemption Song”, “Could You Be Loved” and many others.
The JMTC, who are known for past productions like Cats, Aladdin, Alice in Wonderland and The Lion King, are preparing for auditions that are set to take place this September 6th , 7th and 9th at the St. Andrew High School for Girls in New Kingston, Jamaica.
Cedella Marley (Bob Marley’s daughter, CEO of the Marley Group of Companies and children’s author) says, “The Group through Tuff Gong International is very happy to be associated with the upcoming production as the life of our father Bob Marley continues to inspire the young and the old as we continue to spread his positive message to the younger generation”.
Danille Stiebel, JMTC’s producer, notes, “the Jamaica Junior Theatre is indeed honored to be given such an opportunity of creating a Jamaican musical centered on the legacy of Bob Marley. This is a great opportunity for the Company and Musical Theatre in Jamaica to truly showcase its international appeal and reach. Very happy persons can experience another of the many facets of Brand Jamaica.”
Nesta’s Rock will play at the Phillip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts at the University of the West Indies, Mona from January 9, 2015 through February 22, 2015. On February 6, 2015, there will be an extra special showing will take place to celebrate Marley’s 70th birthday.
